Book release: cartoons for dog lovers of all ages

Auckland dog-lover Cornelia Luethi has launched her debut book, “Minnie The Westie: The Adventures Of A West Highland Terrier Cartoon Dog”. The book portrays humorous cartoons based on Cornelia’s real-life dog, Minnie, a West Highland White Terrier.

Designed to appeal to dog lovers of all ages, Minnie The Westie takes a light-hearted view at life, as seen through a dog’s eyes. Some of Minnie’s adventures unfold across a number of pages; whilst others stand alone as single-page gags. Also featuring in the cartoons are Minnie’s boyfriend, Morris (also a Westie); Flo the bug; and Minnie’s human mum and dad.

“I’ve always loved cartoon animals: my favourite was Garfield,” says cartoonist Cornelia Luethi. “Like many dog owners, I guess I’m a little bit obsessed with my dog, and find so many of Minnie’s daily antics hilarious. It didn’t take me long to build up enough ideas for the 85 cartoons in this book.”

Cornelia adds that some of the stories are based on real events, whereas others are based on her imagination: “Westies are such lively little dogs, it’s quite easy to imagine them getting up to all kinds of antics!”

Although Cornelia only started drawing cartoons a year ago, she quickly realised she’d created something unique with her Minnie sketches: “Seeing other people look at my Minnie The Westie cartoons is very rewarding – usually, they can’t help but smile at the cartoons. I was smiling as I drew them, so it’s nice to be able to share those warm, fuzzy feelings that dogs give us!”

“That’s also why I put a whole website together for Minnie The Westie. At www.MinnieTheWestie.com, dog lovers can enjoy free cartoons, as well as signing up for “Minnie Mail”, where they’ll receive a cartoon by email each month.”

What’s more, not-for-profit organisations are able to use Minnie The Westie cartoons on their websites and newsletters free of charge, whereas commercial users pay a small fee. Full details are at www.minniethewestie.com/cartoons/licensing

Minnie is very popular on social media already, with more than 1,200 Followers on Twitter and a growing number of loyal Facebook fans. Many of these are based in the US and UK.

Minnie The Westie is available as a paperback from Amazon.com (ISBN 978-0-473-19504-5), and also as a Kindle ebook.

Bonnie and Jack: it’s true wuff!

Bonnie and Jack: it’s true wuff!

I love socialising, both in the real world and online… that’s why I love Facebook and Twitter so much.

One of my bestie Westies on Twitter is the lovely Bonnie (@Bonniethewestie) who lives in Bedfordshire, England… she is such a cutie! Here’s a photo of Bonnie:

Bonnie The Westie

My beautiful furiend, Bonnie 🙂

Over the past few months a romance has been unfolding between Bonnie and the handsome Jack (@JackMcWestie)… he is a very fine-looking fellow from North Wales:

One day, Jack decided he wanted to give Bonnie a beautiful blingy bowdana as a sign of his true wuff. The bowdana was made by another Twitter furiend, Cosmo (@Cosmolitious) – he is a Yorkie. Here is Cosmo, as you can see he is very very stylish and fashionable:

Cosmo - he is one stylish dude!

Problem was, Bonnie’s mum had already ordered a bowdana from Cosmo, and all sorts of chaos followed! Bonnie even had to show her doggy ID at the Post Office!

You can read the full wuff story on Cosmo’s pawsome blog: http://cosmolitious.blogspot.com/2011/09/bonnies-bowdana.html

It is a wuffly story… enjoy!

I’ll finish off with some photos of Bonnie looking beautiful in her blingy bowdana… on the front you can see the blingy “B” for “Bonnie”…

… and on the reverse side there is a pretty paw:

Very stylish… and it’s such a beautiful wuff story!

Special talent: Hypnotise-eyes

Special talent: Hypnotise-eyes

Hello my furiends!

Recently I told you about my special talent as a “Minnie-Matic“, which is a great way of getting extra noms.

But the problem with that approach is that it’s a little bit reactive, and totally reliant on the humans dropping food on the floor.

So when I have an extra hunger going (which is, um, quite often!), I have a more proactive approach to securing extra noms.

The secret? My hypnotise-eyes!

Hypnotise-eyes... "look deep into my eyes... feed me... feed me..."The hypnotise-eyes work a treat on my dad… unfortunately mum is a little bit more resilient! But if I work it hard enough, even she will cave in. 😉

I hope the hypnotise-eyes trick works as well for you as it does for me, my nom-loving friends!

Love ‘n’ licks,

Minnie x

Nom nom nom!

I do like my food, and like to try all sorts of tricks to increase my daily doggy dietary intake.

This particular “hypnotise-eyes” trick works very well with dad, but not quite so well with mum!

By the way, if you like my dog cartoons you can get the latest Minnie The Westie cartoon directly in your email In Box each month when you sign up for Minnie Mail… it’s free!

Anyway, all this talk of food is making me hungry… must go and find some snacks!

Till next time,

Love ‘n’ licks,

Special talent: Minnie-Matic

Special talent: Minnie-Matic

If you’ve seen the Cartoon of the Month this month, you’ll see that my nickname is “Minnie-Matic”:

Minnie-Matic

What can I say, I am a very house-proud Westie and like to make sure that the floor is clean! Should dad (or mum) ever happen to drop any food, I’m there right away to clean it up!

Favourite food spills to clean: chicken, fish, frozen peas, carrots.

Minnie-Matic is not available for the following food spills: lettuce, tomato, strawberries… ugh!

What about your dog – do they like to keep the floor clean too?

Waggy tails,

Minnie x

Special talent: belly rubs

My special talent: getting belly rubs

Westies are very talented dogs y’know.

Yes, there are the usual West Highland Terrier traits of digging, being stubborn, being cute… but there’s so much more to us than just that!

My special talent (and hobby) is getting belly rubs from strangers when I’m out walking with mum and dad.

Westie belly rub

The humans tend to roll their eyes when I’m so friendly to strangers, but I don’t care. The humans obviously don’t realise just how good a belly rub is!

Mmmmm, belly rubs  *dreamy look just thinking about belly rubs…*

Morris, the cute Westie boy next door…

Morris, the cute Westie boy next door…

A couple of weeks ago I blogged about my buddy Morris, who appears in my cartoons.

I thought you might like to see some photos of the real Morris, as he is a very cute Westie!

Minnie and Morris

Morris (top) was just a wee pup when this photo was taken. Aaaah!

Morris and I get to spend quite a lot of time together. And when we’re tired from playing, we snoozzzzze!

Sleeping Westies

(That’s Morris on the left, and me on the right… I’m the one with the pink diamante collar!)

Do you have a Bestie Westie?

Minnie The Westie lives in New Zealand

Minnie The Westie lives in New Zealand

New Zealand is a country in the South Pacific. Being south of the Equator, you might notice in some of Minnie’s cartoons that her (human) mum and dad wear shorts and t-shirts at Christmas: that’s because it’s summer in New Zealand at that time. The seasons are opposite to those in the northern hemisphere.

Being close to the date line, New Zealand is one of the first countries to see in every new day.

Minnie the Westie lives in New Zealand

Whereabouts in New Zealand does Minnie The Westie live?

Minnie lives in Auckland, in the North Island of New Zealand. Although Auckland isn’t the capital of NZ (that’s Wellington), it is the largest city with a population of just under 1.5 million people.

Auckland is a great place to be a dog: there are lots of beaches and green spaces for running around on. It’s pawsome!

And it’s not just Minnie that thinks Auckland is pawsome…

Auckland regularly ranks highly in quality of living surveys. According to Wikiepedia:

The 2010 Mercer Quality of Living Survey ranked Auckland 4th equal place in the world on its list, while The Economist’s World’s Most Livable Cities index of 2010 ranked Auckland in 10th place. In 2008, Auckland was classified as an Alpha World City in the World Cities Study Group’s inventory by Loughborough University.

West Highland Terriers are popular dogs in New Zealand: check out the West Highland White Terrier Club of  NZ (Westie Club).
